Resolution for Excel’s " … is locked for editing by …" or "locked for editing, open as read only" messages

Excel Lock Files

Excel Lock files begin with a "~" and then the filename of the XLS (X) file.

For instance ~$filename.xlsx

The general advice is to delete the lock file.

  • The lock file is a hidden file.

  • The lock file may be found in a Shared Folder.
    In Windows:

    • Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management.

    • Start > Control Panel > System and Security > Administrative Tools > Computer Management
