Publish to the Power BI Service from Power BI Desktop
How to publish semantic models, reports, dashboards and visualizations from Power BI Desktop to a Power BI Service tenant.
Requirements
Computer server with Power BI Desktop Pro or Power BI Desktop Premium.
Credentials to Power BI Desktop Pro or Power BI Desktop Premium as licensed in the Power BI Service.
Power BI Credentials with user rights. There are two ways to meet this requirement:
Option 1: Credentials with Admin or Member rights
Power BI Service Credentials with user credentials with Admin or Member rights. The recommended option.Credentials with Admin or Member rights to the Tenant in the Power BI Service.
Option 2: Sign In as a Guest User
Credentials you use to sign in to your Power BI Service.
Organization name
Your email address
the domain name of the organization (e.g., dev.dataself.com)
The Power BI Service tenant URL from the Tenant’s About Power BI page.
The DataSelf template/PBIX files.
Please request the template/PBIX files from your DataSelf tech lead.
NOTES:
Power BI is licensed on a named-user basis. Every person must have their own license.
Open and Publish to Power BI Service
Open Power BI Desktop
Run Power BI Desktop
Click Select a data source > blank report, without opening any file .
Sign in as a Guest User.
Click Sign in on the top right.
Enter the credentials you use to sign in to your Power BI Service
Click your name on the top right > Sign out.
Click Sign in
Enter your credentials, organization name and domain name of the organization (e.g. dev.dataself.com).
Next > click your email.
Power BI Desktop should now be connected to the proper PBI Service Tenant. Go to the Publish section below
Sign in with Credentials with Admin or Member rights.
Sign in with user credentials with Admin or Member rights that work with Power BI Service tenant (same domain).If Power BI Desktop is not signed in Then click Sign in on the top right.
Enter credentials with Admin or Member rights that work with the Power BI Service tenant (same domain).
Publish to Power BI Service
Power BI Desktop should now show Home and Open on the left panel.
Click Open
Click Browse this device.
Select the PBIX file you want to publish.
Open the PBIX file.
If the reports in the PBIX need to be connected to a different PBIX Semantic Model Then update the data source in the PBIX file.
a. Click Transform Data in top center header > Data Source Setting > Change Source
b. Select the proper data source
c. Close.
You should now see the report with some good data.Click Publish > Save
Select the Workspace to publish to
Click Select.
Wait for the success message.Use the Tenant URL to verify that the workbook has been published and works as expected.
NOTES:
Power BI Desktop works without signing in. However, in order to publish a report to the Power BI Service workspace or connect to a semantic model to build a new report you must sign in. Signing in creates the connection to the Power BI Service instance.
